Northeastern has an overarching commitment to use-inspired, solution-focused research and established a strong portfolio of initiatives focused on advancing national and global security.

Security is one of Northeastern’s three strategic research imperatives; we have more than 90 ongoing research projects financed by the Department of Defense. The university is also home to the George J. Kostas Research Institute for Homeland Security and ALERT (Awareness and Localization of Explosives-Related Threats)—one of the Department of Homeland’s Security 12 Centers of Excellence.

Our multidisciplinary degree programs complement our research initiatives and address some of the most pressing problems facing domestic and international security today, from cyber warfare and terrorism to transnational crime and environmental threats.
