How to Use Your Benefits

If you are eligible for education benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, here is everything you need to know about how to use those benefits at Northeastern in 10 easy steps.

1. Contact the Veterans Affairs Regional Office
You can call them at 888.GI.BILL.1 (888.442.4551) or visit Vets.gov to initiate the Education Benefits Application Process.

2. Get Certificate of Eligibility
Request a certificate of eligibility (COE) from the Veterans Affairs office.

3. Apply
Apply for acceptance to a Northeastern program.
Email [email protected] with any questions.

4. Enroll
Enroll in classes at Northeastern.
To be eligible for the maximum Post-9/11 GI Bill® housing benefit, you must be enrolled full-time with at least one on-ground class extending throughout the entire term.

5. Submit Certificate of Eligibility to Northeastern
Forward a copy of your COE to Northeastern’s Veterans Affairs school-verifying official.

6. Northeastern Verifies Your Enrollment
The school certifying official (SCO) will verify your enrollment based on your course registration.

7. Northeastern Submits Your Information
The SCO will submit your enrollment data to the VA.

8. Receive Email Confirmation
You should receive an automatic notification through your Husky email address each time a certificate is submitted on your behalf.

9. Use Check to Pay Tuition
For the Montgomery GI Bill, the VA will mail you a check for the eligible amount of your benefit, Northeastern will bill your student account for your tuition, and you will pay your tuition. For the Post-9/11 GI Bill, tuition payments are made directly to the school by the VA, which will pay in direct deposit.

10. Repeat
Repeat steps 4-9 for each term.
