VA Education Benefits

  • The Post 9/11 GI Bill (Ch. 33)

To qualify for the maximum amounts, you must have served 36 months on active duty, received a Purple Heart on or after 9/11/2001, or you were discharged because of a service-connected disability.

Those that served less than 36 months will have all payments prorated by their eligibility tier:

  • 910 to 1,094 days (30 to 35 months): 90% of the full benefit
  • 730 to 909 days (24 to 29 months): 80% of the full benefit
  • 545 to 729 days (18 to 23 months): 70% of the full benefit
  • 180 to 544 days (6 to 17 months): 60% of the full benefit
  • 90 to 179 days (90 days to 5 months): 50% of the full benefit

  • Tuition and Fees
  • If you are entitled to less than 100%, the payment for each term as well as the annual tuition cap will be prorated by your eligibility tier.
  • Northeastern is required to report the net tuition and fee charges to the Department of Veterans Affairs after applying all tuition-based scholarships, grants, waivers, or loans to your bill. Title IV funding such as the Pell Grant and unsubsidized loans are not considered to be tuition based and are not factored into the amount invoiced to the VA.

Payments are prorated by your eligibility tier and your Rate of Pursuit (full time status).

  • Undergraduate students are considered full time at 12-16 credit hours per term

How to use VA benefits at Northeastern

Step 2

Check WEAMS to ensure your program is approved for funding, The, Search “Northeastern University” then select the campus you will attend to see currently approved programs. If it’s not approved, let us know

Step 3

After you are admitted to Northeastern, send a copy of your VA Certificate of Eligibility or Statement of Benefits to [email protected]

Register for classes

Step 5

Submit a Request for VA Benefit Certification (RVAB) form through the StudentHub each term you wish to use your benefits


Certification Process

Step 1

Request for VA Benefit form is received by the School Certifying Official (SCO)

Step 2

4-6 weeks prior to the start of a term, the SCO will report the number of credits you are enrolled in for the term to the Department of Veterans Affairs, and $0 for tuition. Protections are added to your student account to prevent late fees and holds

Step 3

 (Ch.33 Only) After the add/drop period passes, SCOs will begin to report tuition and required fees to the VA.

Step 4

 (Ch. 33 Only) VA Payment is received and posted to your student account.

If Yellow Ribbon payment is received for the term, Northeastern’s matching contribution will be added at that time.
